A history of football is normally traced back to it's beginnings in
rugby. The English game which is much like football and soccer this
began in England back in the early 1800's.
The faculty campuses of Ivy League schools all played similar variations of football with the mid 1800's. Then right after no more the Civil War across the 1860's a number of the colleges began playing organized football. Princeton University frontiered some of the basic rules of football as well as the game became patented. It appears odd to be able to patent a game however the sport began to grow.
